Is there a very special older horse in your life? Honor him/her with a nomination for the 2020 Connecticut Distinguished Older Horse of the Year Award.

In the Spring of 2019, Governor Dannell Malloy proclaimed the fourth week in May as the official week of recognition for the Older and Retired Horses of Connecticut. The week-long observance aims to unify equine retirement programs throughout the state and to raise awareness for long-term care of veteran horses. Later in 2019, it was part of Raised Bill No. 1091, raised before the General Assembly to be Connecticut State Law, making this an annual recognition. Coincidentally, Older Horse Week falls appropriately during the month set aside nationally to recognize the needs and priorities of Older Americans.

Of the thousands of horses entering the rescue stream, older and infirm horses are the most vulnerable. “Connecticut Older Horse Week” is meant raise awareness of their often sad plight. We at Mitchell Farm believe that all horses deserve dignity in their older, less useful years. Our hope is to inspire others to provide the same care for the older horses in their lives.

Requirements for nomination are only that the horse be at least 20 years old and live or be boarded in Connecticut or nominated by a resident of Connecticut. It does not matter whether or not the horse is retired.

Nominations must be submitted by email to  subject: Older horse award nomination and received by April 30th at 5 p.m. Submissions must include a maximum 200 word essay about your nominee, one photo and a $10 nomination fee.  Tell us what makes this horse so special in your eyes.  Is it accomplishments? Or because he/she likes to play in the mud and make you laugh?

All nomination dollars will go to support the awesome older horses retired to Mitchell Farm and can be made at this link.   Official nominations will be posted both on the Mitchell Farm Facebook page and on our website

Voting will begin at on May 1st at $1 per vote. Here again, all proceeds will go to support the deserving Mitchell Farm retirees.

Vote tallies will be posted daily on Facebook and our website.  Voting closes May 20th at 5 pm.  The winner of the 2020 CT Distinguished Older Horse of the Year Award will be announced on Saturday, May 23rd at the Mitchell Farm Open Barn & Fun Day and/or virtually on Facebook (COVID19 dependent), and on our website.
